How does a mission get started?
Wow, where do I start to tell this story? Do I start with getting on the plane, or do I really bring it together for you as the Lord did for me. I will choose the latter, because I want you to be a part of this adventure, just like the Lord is allowing me to be.
You see, I never set out to do mission work. Oh I have been a service minded person most of my life, while serving as a scout master for several years, and then serving as a Jaycee for over a dozen years. I have always enjoyed offering my time for others to benefit. You might say, I have been one who appreciates what the Lord has given me and loves to share. But a missionary…..never in a slight imaginative state, or a thousand years which ever comes first.
The Lord has given my family, that is, myself, my wife, and two daughters a love for horses. We have several, both quarter horses for riding and Belgian horses for pulling wagons etcetera. Well several years ago, we decided to go out West and take one of those outfitter rides where you take your food, bed roll, and necessities and head into the mountains for ten days. We had so much fun, we decided to head west again. We discovered a wagon train trip which was available near Cody, Wyoming. At first, I was reluctant because I felt it might consist of rough language cowboys, or the partying crowd. However, I notice there was a cross on the ad. Now that sorta surprised me, so I called to inquire further. Hum, I thought, this might work. The wagon boss was a pastor and he assured me things were family oriented. OK, here we go again.
Well year and trip two was just as much fun and even more, than trip one. We were sold on the West. As it turns out Pastor Kurt McNabb who pastors a small Baptist Church in the Clark, Wyoming area was the wagon boss and he is really something. I hope every American who reads this will venture to Clark, Wyoming some weekend and visit his church. It may just be the best day of your life. And just maybe it will be the beginning of an extended life for you. He is a Christian with an invasis on Christ. He is fun, interesting, educational, and devoted. Did I mention, he also runs a boys home for boys who need some special attention. With the Lord’s blessing, he shows them that attention.
Well Pastor Kurt being an expert in boys’ care often fails to meet the financial side of running a boys home. The reason is quite simple. He refuses to send a boy home even when the expected payment for his stay is not available. Netherwords people pay for his help, or they are suspose to anyway, but often do not. Since he loves his work, and the boys, he will not send them home for lack of support. Consequently, the ranch falls short on many items in the budget.
Thus we have year and trip 3 to Wyoming. I asked Pastor Kurt, if I could come out and spend the following summer with my girls and work on his ranch and give it some loving attention. He said he would appreciate the help, but the funds were not available at this time for the supplies needed. Isn’t it great how the Lord works. I just happen to have a budget surplus for remodeling in my business and brought my credit card along. It was a great summer. Maybe the best my family has ever had. I pray someone else will pitch in and follow up on this great ministry Pastor Kurt and his wife have ran for many years. If it touches your heart, touch his, as I am sure he is still keeping boys who need his help; even though the support is not there. Pastor Kurt McNabb % Ft Shiloh Clark, Wyoming. Actually the mail may run through Cody, Wyoming.
Moving on to my mission duties. Another story, not told here, relinguishes the unabeliveable way Pastor Kurt met Pastor Len Crow from Urilla, Ontario Canada. Now here are two men who will be sitting in the front row, when we get to heaven. They are two extremely unique individuals, whose similarities join when their relationship to the Lord is considered. Wow are they good mentors for me.
Anyway the summer we stayed in Clark, we took our stage coach. Yes, we have a real stage coach just like the first Concord Stage. Using Fort Shiloh horses, I drove people to church every Sunday. It was great, and especially gradifying, because I think I took a few people to church who had never ben there before. It really added to the summer fun. That country church even had a place to tie my horses. Well, Pastor Len called his friend Pastor Kurt and mentioned to him he wanted to find a stagecoach to help raise money for a childrens home in the Philippines. Here we go again…..
A quick phone call and I was scheduled to go to Calgary with the stage for the 100 year celebration of Alberta coupled with the Calgary Stampede and a pony express ride accross Canada. The purpose of course to raise money for children. After raising over 30,000 dollars Pastor Len asked me if I wanted to go to the Philippines to help spend the money on the latest expansion to Harvesters Baptist Church and Children’s home in the Philippines. I would need to pay my own expenses, so we could use all the money for the home. I accepted and we have Mission Trip “1″.
See page “Mission Trip One” for the beginning of the beginning.
